While Trae Young has made plenty of impact on the court in Atlanta, he’s proven to make just as big an impact off of it as well.
Through the Trae Young Foundation, Young was able to contribute $10,000 to RIP Medical Debt, a charity with a focus on the elimination of personal medical debt for people that cannot afford to pay them. That contribution, made just after the New Year, allowed RIP Medical Debt to help 570 people by forgiving approximately $1,059,186.39 in outstanding medical expenses, according to a news release.
The average debt abolished is $1,858.
“Giving back to this community is extremely important to me,” Young said about his contribution. “I hope these families can find a bit of relief knowing that their bills have been taken care of as we enter the New Year.”
Young had heard about RIP Medical Debt and their cause through his parents, who told him about their own experiences with medical debt and how a small contribution could go a long way for someone in need.
After hearing about how his contribution impacted multiple people, some of whom reached out to him on Twitter, Young reflected on his own personal experience with medical debt.
“It made me appreciate what I did and made me appreciate the blessings that I have,” Young said. “It made me kind of tear up a little bit because of my family background and things like that with what they’ve been through. Seeing someone going into the New Year a little bit happier and in a positive way definitely made me feel better.”
Those benefiting from relief received a yellow envelope branded with “RIP Medical Debt” in the mail that ensured that their medical debt had been relieved.
